profile of a graduate in choreography – general aim of the SNDO
A choreographic artist trained at the SNDO: can research and develop a concept for performance work, and has the ability to develop structures and strategies for the making of a coherent performance, has the ability to draw on knowledge as well as the intuition for decision-making in the moment, can research and develop movement material in the creative process, has insight and basic knowledge in the areas of theatre production skills: can function as a choreographic artist, and has insight into her/his position within the work situation and can negotiate work schedules and coordinate production crews, is aware and is capable of articulating the aesthetic, social and historical implications of the work in the context of the dance field, as well as culture at large.
choreographic competencies The national choreographic competencies formulate the characteristics that a graduate student of the SNDO must possess. They are supplemented with the qualifications that serve as directive guidance for the study programme and also during the evaluation. The Educational Qualifications / profile of a choreographer

vision The choreographer possesses the capacity to develop ideas and convictions within the profession, feels an inner necessity to communicate these and make these productive and visible in choreographies, applies his ambitions to dance, loves his/her profession, is highly motivated and works from a personal and authentic artistic vision on dance and can illuminate upon it.
creative capacity The choreographer possesses the capacity to deal creatively with intuitions, observations, impressions and emotions, to translate these into concepts and artistic ideas and to make these visible in a choreography, researches and gives visible form to his own identity as a choreographic artist, transforms inspiration visibly into a choreographic concept and translates concepts into danceworks.
collaborative capacity The choreographer possesses the capacity to collaborate with others involved (often multidisciplinary), to contribute actively to a shared product or process and utilises his/her own craftsmanship and function to adequately contribute to the (multidisciplinary) collaboration that is demanded for the realization of a dance (theatre) production.
communicative capacity The choreographer possesses the capacity to effectively and efficiently communicate, coordinate and account for his actions in various professional contexts, both orally as well as in written form, communicates with colleagues and other interested parties about the content and meaning of dance, communicates with interested external parties about the content and meaning of dance and movement.
analytic capacity The choreographer possesses the capacity to analyze artistic products and processes, has analytic and compositional insight into dance, and can communicate about this has analytic insight into his own function and role, and acts from this insight as choreographer.
craftsmanship The choreographer possesses the capacity to professionally apply a broad scope of instrumental skills and craftsmanship in works of dance, functions as a proficient choreographer both in respect to the choreographic concept as well to its execution, demonstrates through his/her actions and communication that he/her possesses knowledge about choreographic and dance related developments in various fields of the profession and demonstrates through his/her actions and communication that he/her possesses knowledge about other arts in relation to his/her dance artistry and works from an awareness of the discipline of training for the optimization of physical skills and makes optimal use of physical and creative skills and characteristics of his (dance) collaborators, consciously employs skills and (dance) techniques as instruments for the communication of choreographies to dancers, consciously employs compositional techniques and methods as instruments for the creation of choreographies and uses knowledge of theatre and theatrical design and manages and directs a group of dancers.
entrepreneurship The choreographer possesses the capacity to independently shape a professional existence within the world of dance, presents him/her self products, stays informed about developments of government rules and labour legislation, is capable of taking/making appropriate business ‘precautions’/arrangements, both for the short- and long term, acknowledges the importance of relevant social/professional networks, adequately organizes his actions and activities in relation to the business side of the work.
environmental orientation The choreographer possesses the sensitivity to identify and employ relevant environmental factors within society in his dance works and shows in his/her communication that he is informed about international artistic and social developments.
learning capacity The choreographer possesses the capacity to learn and continue developments in dance maintains an arsenal of relevant knowledge and skills and is able to innovate these [to his/her advantage].
reflective capacity The choreographer possesses the capacity to reflect on his /her own actions to achieve better results and can reflect upon his/her own process and product and can adequately process the outcome.
innovative capacity The choreographer possesses the capacity to identify possibilities and to do research and experimentation within his/her own profession has a critical and inquisitive attitude toward innovation in the field and growth within the profession.
organizational capacity The choreographer possesses the capacity to organize the creative and productive process consciously, purposefully and effectively and adequately organizes his actions and activities in relation to his work.
